Walking into the gym at 10:30pm on a Thursday, I place my finger on the biometric scanner to authenticate my membership while the young lady behind the counter looks up. Smiling she greets me saying “hello sir”, I respond with a “Hi, am I good?” to indicate that I have successfully authenticated by thumb print as a paying gym member. Normally the speakers play a clip that says “have a wonderful workout!” but it didn’t play this time. She looks down at the computer and then back up at me and smiles uttering “it’s not good, but it’s fine”. I smile and say thanks,
This was an occurrence of what I would classify as someone saying something “accidentally profound”. The idea that removing the context of this interaction and only including the last quote, really brings this into focus. She likely has seen me at this gym before as I have set windows of time to go exercise but still the words are almost existential.
Was this the universe using an unknowing person as a mouthpiece? Is this a person (me) bringing meaning to something that was just a formality?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
